If you are thinking of trying a new kite destination for your next holiday, check out these suggestions of the top African spots from Planet Travel.

The best African kitesurf destinations

With a coastline just shy of 20,000 miles, it’s no surprise that Africa is blessed with its fair share of kitesurfing destinations. From the north to the south and east to west (not forgetting some of the islands off the main continental body) there are hundreds of kiting spots to explore.

Travel and infrastructure is not as advanced in Africa as it is across the rest of the world, so many of the best spots remain virtually untouched and unheard of outside of serious kitesurfers. So, if you’re looking to explore new horizons on your kitesurfing adventure, then Africa should be near the top of your list.

The team at Planet Kitesurf Holidays has spent years exploring some of this incredible continent’s most exciting kiting destinations, they even have an office in the windy city of Cape Town. Here is their list of the top five most impressive African kitesurfing spots.

Morocco

With hundreds of miles of rugged Atlantic beaches, some of which stretch all the way to the horizon, and winds that blow all year, Morocco is a truly superb kitesurfing destination. You can discover a huge flat-water lagoon at Dakhla with 75 to 80% wind reliability throughout the year and accommodation right on the water’s edge. Or head to Essaouira if waves and strong winds are more your thing. Culturally Morocco is also incredibly rich, and with stunning scenery including the Atlas mountains and Sahara Desert it’s got a lot to offer.

Egypt

Egypt is a country that needs little introduction. With its iconic structures and rich history, this is a destination that is on many a bucket list. But it has another side to it, with a choice of kitesurfing destinations including El Gouna, Safaga, Soma Bay and Hurghada lining the Red Sea coast. Spacious sandy beaches and big winds combine with the warm turquoise waters to create one of the very best kiting countries in Africa.

South Africa

Cape Town is probably the best-known kiting spot in South Africa and it is indeed pretty incredible. But you might not know about Langebaan. Located around an hour and a half from Cape Town, this charming seaside village sits on a vast flat-water lagoon. And with 95% wind reliability during South Africa’s summer months, it’s one of Africa’s hidden gems. One of the other major advantages of South Africa is that its extremely affordable and with a choice of direct overnight flights from the UK and most major European airports, a week-long winter getaway is a real possibility.

Zanzibar

An island just off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is home to beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The best winds are generally from December through to March, and then again from July to September. And with an excellent choice of high-end accommodation near the best kiting spots, this is a top destination for anyone wanting to combine luxury with adventure.

Mauritius

With around half a dozen world class kitesurfing spots scattered around Mauritius’ coastline, this is an exceptional kitesurfing destination. Set in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean off the coast of mainland Africa, there are direct flights from the UK or you can combine a holiday here with a safari in South Africa. With reliable wind and spots that combine lagoons and waves, there is something for all levels of rider. And because the windy season – between May and November – coincides with the low tourism season, you can also find great deals on some of the best luxury hotels in the world.
