5 reasons why you should go kitesurfing in Langebaan

Located on South Africa’s west coast, Langebaan is more than just a picturesque seaside town. This beautiful little place boasts a large flat water lagoon that is one of the world’s best kitesurfing destinations. Planet Kitesurf Holidays give us 5 reasons why you need to go kitesurfing in Langebaan:

1.  All the wind in the world

From November until March the wind in Langebaan is super consistent. Building steadily throughout the day, you are virtually guaranteed a good cross-shore wind during these South African summer months. In March and April the wind drops off and the lighter wind conditions are favoured by foilers who love the deep, flat water.

2. Conditions for every level

Langebaan is a great place for kitesurfers of every level. Mornings are when the kite schools take to the beach with beginners for some kite flying and body dragging while intermediates will feel safe and secure no matter where they decide to kite. The main beach is manned by a rescue boat and the currents help to push you back on shore, while just round the corner at Shark Bay a shallow, flat area with less wind is also great for honing your skills. When the wind picks up, a slight chop and small waves provide a playground for freestylers and you can see why kiters from all over the world flock here to practice their tricks.

3. It’s stunningly beautiful

Boasting big blue beautiful waters and long white sandy beaches, the quaint village of Langebaan is simply gorgeous. While the water isn’t as warm as the Mediterranean (you will need at least a shorty wetsuit) you could be forgiven for thinking you were on some undiscovered Greek island. The town and lagoon are also surrounded by a natural reserve so the surrounding scenery is stunning with flamingoes and pelicans dotting the shoreline.

4. Close to Cape Town

Located just an hour’s drive from the city of Cape Town, getting to Langebaan is super easy. Most major airlines fly direct to Cape Town and you can be hitting the shores of the lagoon the same day you land. If you like the waves, Cape Town is an epic kiting destination and a few days on the windy shores of Blouberg can easily be combined with a tranquil flat water getaway to Langebaan. Whatever you do, be sure to take a few days at the end of your kiting holiday in Langebaan to explore the coastline and visit this bucket-list city, you may just find yourself returning time and time again!

5. Fantastic accommodation

Langebaan offers limited accommodation options, but what they do have is fantastically geared towards a kiting holiday. Planet works with the top accommodation providers in Langebaan and with an office in nearby Cape Town they are able to personally visit and inspect each hotel in the area. One of their favourites, Windtown, offers an amazing onsite centre and nifty kite wash area that is fantastic for washing off the salt after a day on the water. It’s also only a short walk from the beach and has a super restaurant. Another great option, especially for families, is Planet’s Langebaan Luxury Villa. With scenic views over the bay, the house can be booked out in its entirety, even if you’re only two people. With a super large kitchen, and spacious dining and living areas this is a true home away from home.
