“Growing up on Sal, we all loved the water and we had the influence of people coming on holiday to kitesurf, windsurf and surf, and although we weren’t blessed with our own equipment we always had the blessing of amazing conditions. What Mitu, Airton, myself and many others did was hang out at the kite schools literally from morning until night. We would do anything: helping tourists to launch and land their kites, look after their bags, clean the beach and then – when we had free time – we would get to go in the water and make the most of it.”

There's definitely something a bit special about Cape Verde. How to explain the high ratio of talent that appears from a relatively small island? Matchu Lopes goes some way to revealing the magic involved…

“We shot the first day at the marina in town where all the local fishing boats come and go. Jesse and myself enjoyed a big air session as the locals were left stunned, never having seen something like high wind kiteboarding before, let alone former King of the Air champion Jesse Richman going wild, boosting over their boats and looping over the pier. We had a great time amusing the crowd and stacking some crazy kiteloop shots against a jungle backdrop, whilst testing the new Naish Dash…”

Ewan Jaspan, along with Jesse Richman and Paula Rosales, seek out some lesser visited (and even lesser kited) corners of the Philippines with a whole lot of spanking new Naish kit…

“Not long after we really started to enjoy ourselves in the park, we noticed that we were no longer alone. Gradually approaching from the sandy back road that leads to Choko Lake, the Mexican Policía were making their way to the water's edge. For a quick second I wasn't sure how this was going to fare for us. I've only personally experienced fair treatment from Mexican Police but we've all heard the stories…”

The snow hadn't shown up back home, so Colleen Carroll flew south to Mexico instead, pitching up at a kiteboard event she holds dear for many reasons – the La Ventana Classic in Baja.

“There is a five knot current, and there are whales, sea lions and, apparently, big sharks – well, YOLO, I guess I won't get this chance again… So I stick to my plan and always say yes to every opportunity that comes up. Just go with the flow – even though I am shitting my pants.”

Team rider Jana Felicitas Schader gives a brutally honest account of her US road trip with the Flysurfer/Levitaz team, including her foiling escapades underneath the Golden Gate Bridge…

“It has been an epic few years for Matchu who is now pretty much one of the ‘old guard' on tour. Now with a World Title under his belt he was stoked to get to show off his skills on home turf.”

Five days of Ponta Preta perfection delivered a sublime start to the 2018 Wave and Strapless tour. We got the pictures…

“For Big Air riding I love a square board, massive fins and with plenty of stiffness. The main thing is that before taking off, you want to keep as much edge as possible so these features really help you to achieve that.”
