What is inside this issue?

TKM62 relentless synergy - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #62

Relentless Synergy

“Normally, those are the sessions that fire me up. But instead, I felt pressure building. I was scared to jump, scared of the waves… and when I’m not having fun, I don’t perform. I of course wanted to land my best tricks for the video, but doubt kept sneaking in. But what made the difference was the energy between me and Fran, both on and off the water…”

We all experience doubt and fear, but the support of your friends, family or fellow kiters can give you the boost you need, as Nathalie Lambrecht and Francesca Maini found out during their recent video project.

TKM62 Gale Warning - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #62

Gale Warning

“As we descended upon our destination, we encountered dramatic weather alterations. In my lifetime, especially while being involved with the kite industry, I have experienced an array of windy conditions ranging from a delicate breeze to a punishing howl. However, never once had I endured winds of such sustained and violent intensity…”

Andrea Principi, Noè Font and Xander Raith loaded up vehicles with their kit and drove north to Namibia, where they encountered some of the windiest conditions they’d ever kited in.

TKM62 Nuking - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #62

Nuking

“The wind was howling, the tension was real, and the energy on the beach was electric. Lords of Tram GKA Big Air Kite World Cup 2025 turned out to be one of the most intense days in Big Air kiteboarding history, and I’m stoked to have been a part of it. Getting selected for this event is always an honor – it’s one of the wildest stops on the World Tour…”

The recent Lords of Tram comp in France was possibly the most extreme event the GKA has ever witnessed, but competitor Kimo Verkerk kept calm, rode smart, and came out smiling.

TKM62 the mission Kilpisjarvi - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #62

The Mission: Kilpisjärvi

“Unlike the coastal regions of Norway, where the weather is often unpredictable with frequent rain and fluctuating temperatures, Kilpisjärvi benefits from a stable inland climate, remaining a winter wonderland with crisp air, deep snow, and reliable winds. The mountains surrounding the village create an incredible playground for snowkiters, offering endless terrain to explore…”

If you book a northern lights trip to Norway, you often end up close to Kilpisjärvi because the weather is better. Turns out it’s awesome for snowkiting too, as Kari Schibevaag reveals.

TKM62 behind the clip - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #62

Behind the Clip: Plane Jump

“Everything had to be planned down to the smallest detail – where the cameras would be compared to the plane, where my kite might go, where the drone would fly, how to avoid other kiters in the shot, safety and much more. Everything needed to be 100% controlled. We had countless meetings to ensure Luke the pilot would be happy and we would all be confident…”

If you decide you’re going to jump over a flying plane it’s no simple matter. Lasse Walker talks us through the coordination and planning needed for his successful world-first stunt.

TKM62 tangled lines - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #62

Tangled Lines: Zara

“If you want to become a world champion, you have to give everything. It’s not just about training hard. It’s your whole lifestyle. I had to say no to a lot of things, learn how to train smarter, eat better, rest well, and take care of my body and mind. There were many difficult moments – injuries, self-doubt, pressure, but I kept showing up. That’s what it takes…”

We fired Zara Hoogenraad some questions and she talked us through the ups and downs of her kite journey, life on the competition scene, and what it takes to become world champion.

Insight

“What happens once the boards leave our factory? It is not like our responsibility ends once it’s off our hands, right? We’ve been thinking more and more about what impact our boards have during their entire lifecycle and what we can do to reduce impact during the use phase and even at the end of the board’s life…”

The problem of what to do with twintips and surfboards at the end of their life has no easy solution yet. Appletree and Lieuwe give us some insight into the small steps they’re taking.
