TKM63 BEHIND THE LENS - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #63

Behind the Lens

“At the time, I was really into wakeboarding, and Reno would join us when the wind wasn’t blowing. Shooting wakeboarding is a logistical nightmare – you need two boats, two drivers, a rider… and if you’re shooting from the water, you better trust your driver! Reno claimed kiteboarding was way easier to shoot, so I gave it a try – and I’ve been hooked ever since…”

We jumped on a call with André Magarao, the talented Brazilian photographer who snapped this issue’s cover and whose epic shots feature so frequently in our magazine.

TKM63 THE WIND GAMES - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #63

The Wind Games

“The Wind Games is our answer to that question. It’s a digital platform for wind sports where you can compete using just your phone or smartwatch. Think of it like Strava or Playtomic, but for wind. You don’t need a full event setup, or a judge’s tent, or even a crowd. You just need wind and a good session. The platform does the rest…”

Stijn Mul, Michiel Schipper and Marijn Ploeg from SpaceX Kitesurfing have just started a new venture, The Wind Games, in conjunction with Surfr App, that could benefit us all.

WordSmith

Let’s stare at the sky for a second and really take it in – that deep marble blue stretching endlessly, quiet, infinite in every direction. Now imagine an ocean that somehow burns brighter than the sky itself, a turquoise so electric it sears into memory, visible from space and impossible to forget. That’s where we were headed: the Bahamas…

Oswald Smith is particularly adept at throwing a few sentences together, so get stuck into this issue and read Ozzie’s tale of his adventure to the stunningly beautiful Bahamas.

TKM63 Out Back - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #63

Out Back

“Out here, the words ‘remote’ and ‘vast’ take on a whole new meaning. The ‘Wild West’ is a legendary playground for wave-lovers from around the globe. The Indian and Southern Oceans deliver steady groundswells year-round, rolling thousands of kilometers unbroken toward the coast. WA’s waves are powerful. Many of its surf spots are hardcore…”

If anyone is going to win the prize for making the most of the Australian Outback, it’s Gabi Steindl. She heads to Oz’s northwest and scores the waves to herself, miles from civilization.

TKM63 C Kite Festival - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #63

C Kite Festival

“My particular highlight? On the last day we were treated to a catamaran trip. Launching our kites off the cat and kiting alongside the pros who were loving jumping over the boat and each other was so much fun. Then coming back to a cold beer and BBQ, plus more tunes and saxophone playing from DJ SamSax… well, it really doesn’t get any better than that…”

Our Editor Sarah was invited back to the annual C Kite Festival in Mauritius, hosted by C Mauritius Palmar, where she was thoroughly spoilt by all the crew – it was a dream trip.

TKM63 MISSION Monkey Magic copiar - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #63

The Mission: Monkey Magic

“Bali has always had a spot on the map for surfers chasing perfect waves and smoothie bowls – but I went there with a slightly different plan: to kite. I wanted to see if some of the more remote, surf-heavy corners of the island could work for a kite mission. Well, some of them did. Some of them nearly didn’t. Most of them were borderline ridiculous…”

Carl Ferreira’s trip to Bali wasn’t about scoring the best conditions – it was about trying, failing, and occasionally winning. About making it work, even when it didn’t.

TKM63 TANGLED LINES - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #63

Tangled Lines

I started late compared to my competitors and had no racing or sailing experience like most of them. So it was a race against the clock… What I learned from this switch and also from other decisions as a professional athlete I would say: dare to take that risk. Some opportunities only come by once, and you’ll never know beforehand how they turn out…

Annelous Lammerts, a pro freestyle and park rider, took the risk of switching to racing to attempt a shot at the Olympics. Well, the risk paid off and she bagged herself a medal.
