Iceland’s undulating coastline and dramatic volcanic scenery delivered just what Camille Losserand and Edgar Ulrich needed to bag the shots for ION’s latest photoshoot.
“The journey hasn’t always been smooth. Four years ago, I had to undergo a serious hip operation that kept me off the water for nearly two years. It was one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever faced. Being told by doctors that I might never kite at a high level again was devastating. Rebuilding from scratch physically and mentally was humbling…”

Roderick Pijls always has his gear with him, ready for unexpected and unplanned sessions. And they often end up being the most memorable like on his recent road trip in Italy.
“Let’s talk about the debate between boots and straps… I’ve never liked riding in boots because I’ve always thought that you couldn’t move as well in them, the crashes were much harder, and the risk of injury was too high for me. Everyone told me that ‘real’ freestylers should ride with boots. At some point, I stopping caring and switched to straps…”
Finn Flügel competes in three different disciplines and is hell bent on winning championship titles. He is shaking up the Freestyle World Cup by using straps instead of boots…
“Looking back, we romanticized the dangers as proving grounds and focused on the good things: the community, local comps, bigger comps, a track to becoming “pro”, magazines, short edits, and full movies. There was a lot of excitement for the growth of the sport. There was a resounding feeling that kiting was going to hit the masses one day…”
Reider Decker reminisces about the “good old days” and about how his recent film FTN, filmed on an old-school camera, came about. And he even scored this issue’s cover.
