Reigning French Big Air Champion Nathan Texier hails from the windy spot of Barcarès, France. We dive into a chat with the young rider to find out where his kiting journey began.
“This combination of a long, predictable wave and varying wind angles is one of the reasons Pacasmayo has become such a perfect training ground for wave riders. But not everything is easy. Pacasmayo is also famous for testing riders in ways that are very different from most wave destinations. The first challenge begins before the session even starts…”
Sebastian Ribeiro spent two weeks coaching and riding at Pacasmayo in Peru – home to the world’s longest rideable wave. But as he found out, it has a few surprises in store too…
“I feel privileged to have experienced this, from the beautiful food and hospitality at the hotel to meeting and riding with all the riders who attended the event. I’m a great fan of relaxed, non-competitive events that are organized purely for the fun of them and to bring a community together – and the setting of the C Kite Festival amplifies it beyond anything I’ve experienced before.”
This year it was the turn of Generic Foiling Podcast host Freddie Oldfield to head out to Mauritius for the annual C Kite Festival. How would he fare in tropical climes…?
“I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the world through kiting and along the way I’ve seen events come and go. Not all of them provide an atmosphere like this where community is at the heart. The Nordic Kite Fest really achieves this. It has already become about something bigger than kiting. It’s about bringing people together through a shared passion.”
Estonia’s Nordic Kite Festival returned this June for its second year, with kiting royalty Lewis Crathern, Ruben Lenten and Stig Hoefnagel in attendance. Lewis gives us the inside scoop.
“I was so invested in winning KOTA that it completely consumed me. To chase that goal, I had to be selfish at times and fully commit to the process. I always believed I could do it, but there’s a big difference between saying it and actually achieving it. After winning, I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders, not because I proved it to others, but because I proved it to myself.”
Red Bull’s King of the Air 2021 winner Marc Jacobs digs into that momentous achievement and how he’s handling the wild new ride of parenthood, in our Tangled Lines slot.
“I sat in my car for about two hours, watching monster after monster and seeing some famous big wave windsurfers being spat out by the sea back to shore… In Fuerteventura we don’t really have a rescue system like they do in Hawaii or Nazaré, so days like these are sketchy – no jet ski, no second chance if you fall in the wrong place…”
When Storm Therese delivered some monster waves to Fuerteventura’s shores, Julia Castro scrambled to secure a support jet ski and photographer and went out and charged.
“When Carlos Mario hit the scene, he pushed the level yet again with tricks like the KGB 7, Tack 7, Blind Judge 7, Blind Judge 9, three-air passes – it was a big evolution from this kid in those days! And thanks to him all the other riders opened up their mindsets to push harder. Then I took the world title in 2022 bringing some new tricks and grabs into the comps.”
Gianmaria Coccoluto, 2022 World Champion, and Finn Flügel, 2025 World Champion, give us their insight on the evolution of freestyle tricks over the years and what is yet to come.
