THEKITEMAG ISSUE #49

Route 101 Northbound

Noè Font and Xander Raith, together with photographer Toby Bromwich, loaded up a pickup truck with all their kiting and camping gear and headed up the Route 101 highway that runs south to north along the US west coast. They scored themselves some memorable sessions – usually having the water to themselves – in an epic off-the-beaten-kite-track mission.

Vitamin C

This summer Cohan van Dijk headed to Tarifa in his van to train, take part in the Full Power Tarifa Big Air Kite League event and the Qatar Airways GKA Big Air World Championships, and do a video project – check out Vitamin C on YouTube. But as he discovered, the trip wasn’t just about kiting. It was also about the people he met and the friends he made, and it turned out that Tarifa had more than just exhilarating kite sessions in store for him…

No Aloha

In our last issue we heard from Cabrinha about their European demo tour. Keahi de Aboitiz joined them from Hawaii and they then headed to the UK. This was Keahi’s first trip to the sceptered isle so we couldn’t wait to hear what he thought about it. Also on the trip was native hotshot, Hannah Whiteley, who recently signed with Cabrinha and told us how she feels about becoming part of their family.

We were stoked to see an international park style event back in the public eye, with the recent Kite Park League’s Team Battle held in Hood River. What to watch for at King of The Air 2022

For a gentleman as invested in Big Air as our beloved Colin, the KOTA is the equivalent of Christmas morning to a seven-year-old. It’s the Super Bowl to an American, or the World Cup final to people that enjoy kicking inflatable pig bladders of a Saturday. Whilst it’s unlikely they’ll wheel out Beyonce or Snoop Dogg at half time for a musical number, kudos to Red Bull for consistently putting on a fine event for TEN FLAMING YEARS, which is without a doubt the pinnacle of the kite calendar. It’s clear Colin has an awkward tent pole forming in his (off-beige corduroy) pants already, and it’s not even November yet. With recent advances in Big Air trickery, this year is – without a doubt – going to cause him an absolute knee trembler.

We thought it an interesting idea to round up some of the most active brands in the light materials world, and ask them a few awkward questions to try and achieve a broader picture of where this is leading for design and manufacturing industry wide. Ocean Rodeo, Airush, CORE, Duotone and Eleveight give us their honest insights…

Wherever I Lay My Hat

Where is home if you’re often on the road traveling to kite events? Camille and Capucine Delannoy, although originally from France, currently call Brazil home, as their family all moved out there when Camille was 12 and Capucine seven. But a recent trip to Maui has seen it steal a little piece of Camille’s heart, as he told our editor Sarah, and their current, temporary home is Tarifa. Celtia Rebolledo Heil caught up with Capucine there to find out more about her competition mindset and preparation for the GKA Big Air World Championships. [Note as we were going to press: she won!]

Proven Wrong

Roderick Pijls recently signed with FLYSURFER, and for his first photoshoot with them, headed to the beautiful south west of England with the rest of the team – Olly Bridge, Johanna-Catharina Edin, Alina Shalin, Matias Lee, Megan Barnett, and Marketing Manager Ines Rodlauer. It may not have been boardshorts and bikini weather, but the turquoise water and head-high waves of Cornwall won Roderick over to the UK.

THE MISSION: FOLLOW THE WIND

The Netherlands has spawned some of the world’s best kiters with its stormy winds. Taxi!

Stig Hoefnagel heads to Cape Town most winters to make the most of the strong winds along the west coast. But sometimes a road trip is in order to experience a novelty flatwater spot and turn your preconceptions on their head. Stig and fellow Naish rider Cohan van Dijk headed to the south coast where the effects of South Africa’s divisive political legacy are still visible.
