RRD Religion Gold - RRD Gold Religion Y31

The Religion has been a staple in the RRD lineup for a long time, and for the Y30 collection, they introduced two distinct versions: one entirely in Dacron and the high-performance Gold Religion featuring Aluula, the second version of which we are reviewing here.

The Religion remains their dedicated wave-oriented kite and it is reinforced accordingly for the task. The Gold’s leading edge is 85% Aluula which, as we know, is a significantly lighter, stiffer and more responsive material than traditional Dacron. The bases of the struts are also constructed from Aluula, featuring a double-layer reinforcement where they connect to the leading edge. The remainder of the frame uses Rectex Dacron, which is slightly lighter than conventional Dacron while maintaining durability. The canopy features a classic 2×2 ripstop yarn, with strategic panel layouts and reinforcements placed throughout, an essential detail considering the demanding life of a wave kite. All of this results in a construction that feels noticeably lighter and more reactive compared to a full Dacron build, without compromising the strength required for serious wave riding.

For our first session, we waited for the forecast to deliver, finally scoring side-on winds paired with some solid swell. The first thing we noticed upon launching was the kite’s power delivery, specifically, how progressive the depower feels along the bar. Interestingly, in the last tenth of the depower throw, the kite essentially “switches off”, a feature that proved invaluable once we were on the face of a wave. On the water, the Religion feels fast, with a pivotal turning style that keeps it tight in the pocket. Despite this responsiveness, it remains incredibly intuitive. Upwind performance is solid and while there is some bar pressure, it never becomes excessive or tiring. Two things really stood out in the surf: the drift and the depower-to-turn ratio. Even in side-on/onshore conditions, the kite drifted beautifully. More impressively, even when we pushed the bar out to kill the power during a bottom turn, the kite remained responsive and continued to turn tightly. When we had to downloop to escape a closing section or reposition the kite, it offered total control; depending on bar position, we could generate just enough grunt to outrun the foam or virtually no pull at all to simply reposition it, but it never yanked us off our line like some other kites. All of this makes wave riding extremely accessible, whether you’re just starting out or pushing performance at a high level.

We finished that first session feeling that the Religion had more to offer than pure wave performance. So, the next day, we returned with a strapless freestyle board and once again, the kite delivered. It offers enough lift and hangtime to make jumps fun and rewarding, while the fast turning, effective depower and well-balanced downloops provide exactly the control needed for strapless tricks.

To wrap up the review, we know many wave riders also enjoy foiling, so we took it out for a spin in light wind. Thanks to its low weight, exceptional drift and solid low-end grunt, we had a blast in just 7-8 knots, cruising and popping a few jumps and riding some small swells.

The Religion Gold Y31 is, first and foremost, a truly capable wave kite. However, it distinguishes itself from many competitors in the same segment by offering impressive versatility. Beyond pure wave riding, it performs exceptionally well for strapless freestyle and proves surprisingly effective for foiling. That broader performance range makes it more than just a specialized wave tool, it’s a multi-discipline weapon.

So, who is this kite for? It’s the perfect match for the rider who spends most of their time on a surfboard and wants to adapt to whatever the ocean delivers, whether that’s clean waves for carving, messy chop for freestyle or those marginal windy days when only a foil will do.
