THEKITEMAG ISSUE #55

Trade Winds

Things could have gone very wrong for the North photoshoot to the Philippines, with gear getting stuck in customs, a major oil spill disaster, and precarious journeys in the dark on rickety old boats. But the team had session after session thanks to the consistent Amihan trade winds, worked together to get the shots they needed, and all made it back home safely with some epic memories of a beautiful country.

Newsround

One of our favorite photographers, Andre Magarao, spent time in Brazil recently snapping some of the top freestyle pros who go there to train and compete in the butter-flat lagoons. Andre, as well as riders Carlos Mario, Erick Anderson, Gianmaria Coccoluto, Mikaili Sol, Noè Font and Ramiro Gallart, gave us a roundup of their season there.

Bula Vinaka!

Bula Vinaka roughly translates as ‘the good life’, and is used as a welcome greeting in Fiji. Gabi Steindl found both a warm welcome and a taste of the good life on her trip there, experiencing the generous hospitality of the local people and ripping some of the world-class waves Cloudbreak has to offer, happily sharing the lineup with renowned pro surfers and kite-surfers like Kai Lenny.

The Real Stig

If you’ve seen the series Top Gear on the BBC then you’ll know all about The Stig: a professional racing driver who always wears his helmet so remains anonymous, and gets behind the wheel of test cars to put them through their paces. Sharing his name with the infamous character, Stig Hoefnagel knew it would make a great premise for a video project. So he headed to Ireland to do some shooting and racing to see which Stig would come out victorious…

Brazil’s Brutal Downwinder

As the largest country in South America, and with more kiteable coastline and more kitesurfers than anywhere else in the southern hemisphere, if there was going to be a kitesurfing event in Brazil it would have to be the biggest. Such was the challenge set for the XP Sertões Kitesurf downwinder: come up with the longest, toughest, most brutal kitesurfing event on the planet… Editor-in-chief Alex was (kind of) stoked to get an invite…

My beach: Rio de Janeiro

These stunning photos of iconic Rio nearly had us booking the next flight over there. It might normally be northeast Brazil that kiters head to, but as Reno Romeu shows, his home spot provides some good kiting conditions too, plus some fine scenery to admire when you’re out on the water. Reno tells us about the beautiful city where kiting started for him.

Technique: GETTING THE SHOT

We had the great pleasure of meeting up with professional photographer Harry Winnington on Rhodos, Greece during our holidays this summer. Photoshoots are always a process, with many things to be considered and if needed adjusted during the photo session. Together with Harry’s experience and input, and our implementation, we have put together a winning formula of how to get the best results for your kite photos even if you don’t have a camera that’s worth $10k+! Let’s look at camera and shooting equipment, location, time of day, trick selection and posture during the trick, distance to the photographer, and creativity.

The Mission: Rinse and repeat

Carl Ferreira gives us a quick round up of his time in Italy and Spain earlier this year. It was all going well until sadly he had a déjà vu of last year’s trip and once again had to head home early due to an injury. Fear not though, he’s already on the road to recovery. Better luck next year…
