The Champ

How do you become Kite-Surf World Champion after only two years on the World Tour?! Well, living right on the coast is a good start, then a few formative years of ripping at wakeboarding plus trips to places like Indonesia with its world-class waves isn’t gonna hurt. Gabriel Benetton is currently at the top of his game and giving his fellow competitors a run for their money…

I come from Itanhaém, on the coast south of São Paulo in Brazil. It is a super tricky spot for wind. We only have wind when a cold front comes in, and we can end up with two different wind directions on the same day. But I think having to kite in varying conditions helped me a lot to get where I am today. Anyway, well before kiting, I started surfing at home with my dad when I was only three years old. Then my “career” really kicked off when I was seven when some friends of mine started wakeboarding. I joined them and quickly got really into it. I had some good competition results: Junior World Champion and Brazil Champion.

But when I was around 14 I decided to stop wakeboarding because I found I was starting to hurt myself a lot. A couple of months later, the same friends that got me into wakeboarding started kiting, so of course I did too. It seemed inevitable that I would get into twintip freestyle because of my wakeboard background. But actually the sport that I really love and is a lifestyle for me is surfing, so I went into the wave-riding side of kiting because of that. I’m currently writing this on a flight to Mexico, chasing some surf swell in Pascuales. When I’m not kiting I really like to surf – I find it helps a lot with my kiting, so it’s really important to be active in both.

Having grown up competing in wakeboarding, I had a drive to win. I always wanted to be the first! My kitesurf career started with the GKA Big Air event in Tarifa – that was my first ever kitesurf competition and I got second place. After that I became Kite-Surf Junior World Champion in 2022 and this year became Kite-Surf World Champion at the last stop of the tour, in my home country. Reaching that goal, with my whole family there and after only two years on the tour, was a dream. Now I only need to have 10 more of those and then I’m done! Another highlight was at the previous comp in Sylt, where I got a 10-point score for a Triple Front Shove-it – this a trick that I’m the only person in the world to do, so I knew if I landed it they would give me a 10. I just needed the opportunity to do it at a comp with proper conditions and I had that in Sylt. It felt so insane achieving that!

Something I love about my kitesurfing career is getting to travel and doing the tour with riders that have given me a lot of inspiration like Pedro Matos and Sebastian Ribeiro. We are now traveling the world together and have become one big family. This year I got to go to Indonesia and hang out with my fellow team rider Willow-River Tonkin. I met him a few years ago when I started riding for CORE, but had not had the opportunity to spend much time with him. In Indo we spent almost a month together which was so much fun. He is the kindest person I’ve ever met and he is always smiling for everyone and everything that happens. It was so good to be working, kiting and shooting with him and we are already making plans for a trip next year!

I’ve been going to Indonesia for four years, around the same time of the year. It is a sick place because you can surf in the morning and kite in the afternoon. People are also really kind – everyone is keen to help you at any time there – I really love this. This trip, Willow and I went to shoot the new CORE Section which I’ve been riding for quite some time now, and I have to say, it is the best version yet. I feel more bar pressure and feedback from this kite and that really helps with wave riding, especially on those big days when you need to focus on the wave and “forget” about your kite. We certainly got some big days in our month there and scored some insane conditions. Thanks CORE for all your support and thanks Indo for a great trip
